This is especially true of porcelain tile, that is polished and rectified, but also can happen to just about the material. When the rectified tile edge remains against your cutter fence, most cutters are designed with either a soft padding or a spring loaded platform that the tile sits on, and when the snapper is engaged, it allows the tile to move in a slight downward movement, causing it to break over the spine on your score line. When you have rectified Tile that stays hard press against the fence of your cutter, as that downward strike is applied, the top edge corner of the tile is susceptible to chipping if it is allowed to ride against that fence as the downward pressure is applied. Pull your tile just a little bit off of that fence allows it to move freely up and down without rubbing against the metal fence, therefore mitigating the chance of chipping your tile.
