Linked here: https://liketk.it/4NWfZ Here are some frequently asked questions I have received about using this product. How did you install it? I used a cordless nail gun which I highly recommend. I nailed it into the studs. If the studs happen line up with the grooves you can nail in the grooves so the holes would be concealed. You can use a hammer and finish nails as well it just takes a bit more manpower. How do you join the boards? I nailed the panels as close as possible then filled the seam with white caulk. Is it renter friendly? Yes. If you nail it to the walls (not using glue) it can be removed easily and all you will need to do is patch the nail holes. Finish nail holes are pretty small. Does paint scratch off? You definitely need to use a good primer! It will ensure the paint adheres and doesn’t scratch off. I recommend bin zissner bullseye 123. I don’t recommend a 2 in 1 paint/primer. Can you use it in a location with water exposure? This is a personal choice, but I would only use it 1.) If there isn’t a lot of condensation build up 2.) Somewhere it doesn’t have direct water exposure like behind a sink. I would prime, paint, and add a coat of polyurethane and feel very confident in its durability. Do the boards warp over time? I have not had any issues with warping. Using nails and making sure the nails are in studs will ensure it stays in place. Typically studs are 16” apart, and I nailed vertically about every 8”. I found the perfect stain combo to turn this dated 90s ceiling into a beautiful modern white oak look! It’s a combo of Old Masters pickling white and Minwax provincial. The white neutralizes the orange and lightens the wood, while the provincial alters the tone. All while keeping the wood grain! The ceiling did have a stain on it, but no sealer, so we were able to wipe the stain on the wood with no sanding or prep 🙌🏻. It’s a project, but so worth the time & effort! If you have a sealer on your wood it’s going to need sanding or a finish remover. Which is another tedious step, but you can still achieve the same look. How To: I did a 50/50 mix of the two stains but depending on the color and darkness of your wood, it may need adjusting. There are 2 ways you can do it. 1.) You can premix the pickling white and stain which should only requires one coat to get this look, but you have to be thorough about keeping it mixed well as you apply it. Otherwise the white could separate and create some splotchiness. 2.) Apply a coat of pickling white first, then the stain. This is more work but in my testing the coverage looked more even. Small cost, big impact! The best kind of DIY! 1. Select your wood. I used a 1x6 pine but you can go for a wider piece if you want a more dramatic look, or to install it a little lower to hide unsightly blinds. For a higher end finish you could go with a hardwood like oak or alder. 2. Determine the cut size. I cut mine to the window length but you could go wider than the window frame if you prefer that look. Use a miter saw or a hand saw. 3. Apply stain or finish. I used Saman stain in the color whole wheat. Keep in mind if you have other wood tones in your home and choose a color that will complement them. 4. Nail the headers. I used a cordless nail gun and 2” finish nails but a regular hammer will work too. You can use a wood filler the same color as the stain to fill the nail holes if you prefer. Watch to see how I DIYed this pergola! It was actually easier than you think and add so much warmth and character to my exterior! Material used: - 2- 18x16” cedar corbels - 4- 2x6 cedar deck boards - 3” and 4” deck screws - 2- 6” timber screws - 2- 8” steel mending brackets - First and foremost. Find your studs so you can mount it securely. -The corbels I purchased didn’t have a mounting plate so I used chisels to notch out a space where I could secure a steel brace flush to the corbal. - I used 4” screws to mount the corbal into the studs - I drilled a hole in the bottom so I could sink a 6” timber lock screw to make it extra secure. - I used 2- 2x6 cedar boards for the base of the pergola and cut the edges at 35 degree angle to give it a decorative look. - I drilled pocket holes into the boards so the screws would be hidden, and secured them to the corbals with 3” deck screws -Lastly I made all my cuts for the top slats and secured them the same way.
