I thought a lot about how to say this - and decided to just show it. To be clear: I doubt any of these people have ever held a rope, raised an animal, or thought twice about the hands that coaxed their food out of the ground, but they sure do feel some way about me doing it. They’re telling on themselves. This is why minority communities have to keep to themselves. This is why kids don’t come back to the show ring. This is why traditions are lost to time. This is why it’s not that easy. Because these small-minded people can’t imagine a world where everyone who wants to do the work is welcome. Where the color of your skin proudly represents a rich and varied tradition, honed and handed down over generations. Where any kid, anywhere, can grow up to be a cowboy. They’d rather the western industries die than see them diversify, even if that means choking it themselves. That can be their cross to bear, but they won’t get far — and it won’t be mine.
