Tidepooling for Earth Month šš¦Ŗš¦ Living up to my handle & getting out to explore the intertidal zone now that I live so close to the coast! This was my first time finding live sand dollars & I was super excited. Was also stoked to see tons of oysters, clams, a few sea cucumbers, and lots of kelp/algae diversity (lots of Turkish towel!) šæ (Also when I say urchin spines are more pronounced, I am thinking of a very urchiny sea urchin, like a diadema or a Red Sea urchin, but here are urchin species that arenāt as spiny as others, like armored urchins or collectors urchins. Lots of spine diversity with different species!) My @Native Shoes are such a great option for exploring the low tide (& itās super cool how theyāre made from algae as I get excited about algae). Theyāre a great combo with my @alder apparel āgo explore essentialā pants that cinch up so Iām not getting wet. Whatās a cool critter you love to see while tide pooling? Or a dream species you want to see! Reminder, always tidepool with care. Donāt handle marine life if you donāt know how! Donāt yank wildlife off of rocks or other substrates they are firmly attached too. There are safe ways you can handle certain species but if you donāt know, donāt handle. #EarthMonth #TidePools #Tidepooling #SalishSea #recreating #Intertidal #MarineBiology

SPECIES PAPER, HOT OFF THE PRESS! šØš°ā¼ļøš I have been WAITING for this day. Discussing species potential in killer whales has been one of my favorite pastimes for the last several years. Taxonomy fascinates me, especially relating to killer whales & of course, ctenophores. So here we have it. A long awaited killer whale taxonomy revision proposal. Instead of all ecotypes under the Genus species, āOrcinus orcaā, this paper proposed that residents be named, āOrcinus aterā and Biggs/transients be named, āOrcinus recctipinnusā. Why these names? Well, they come from Charles Scammon and Edward Cole, from 1869 & translated ārectipinnusā is Latin for āstraightā and āaterā is Latin for āblackā. Orcinus orca was the name bestowed on killer whales by Carl Linnaeus in 1758. Both ārectipinnusā and āaterā have appeared in potential species names for orcas before, like Grampus rectipinna (Scheffer 1942), and Orca ater fusca (Dall 1874). (Read this naming part of the paper, itās really fascinating!) Now what? Taxonomists from the Society for Marine Mammal Committee on Taxonomy will have a final say on species status from this proposal. If approved, theyāll become the accepted scientific names for the animals from now on. BUT ISNT THIS SO EXCITING?!?!!?!??! ##KillerWhale#Orca ##MarineBiology#Taxonomy #MarineBiologist #marinemammals#MarineMammalshins ##NewSpecies#BreakingNews #SalishSea #Wildlife
