A month ago, I was reflecting with @danielchiasax and realised that a big source of my unhappiness was a result of my lack of discipline in many areas of my life. Growing up, I never had a curfew, never had a fixed bedtime, I never even made it to school consistently. Really God’s grace that I survived my schooling years. Something needed to change. We started brainstorming: What’s a medium-term goal that we could work on together as a team? Something that was challenging enough that could stretch us beyond what we ever thought we could achieve, but that could also be measurable. “How about running a marathon?” I hated running and sucked at it, so we decided okay, this is a good candidate because I want to see if I can change my defeatist mentality towards running. We’d set that as our ultimate goal and stick to it. At that point, I couldn’t even run 2.4km without feeling like I was gonna die, much less 42km, so I knew this was gonna be that next big and scary thing to take on. So, 3 weeks ago, Daniel and I started our plan to run consistently. Week 1: I just wanted to get up early everyday to run before it got too hot outside. Start building the habit. Ran more or less 3km 5 times that week. Week 2: Started scheduling my runs on alternate days when I’m not going hard at the gym, training with @xstephgt. Ran 5km for the first time without stopping! Clocked in 3 x 5km runs that week. Thrilled! Week 3: Daniel suggested doing interval running at a track. So we did 4x400m, 2x200m, all-out sprints as much as possible, and with as much active (walking) recovery in between. These were BRUTALLLL. But fast forward to today: other than my knees starting to ache, I found that my cardiovascular performance greatly improved, and I ran the furthest I ever have: 7km! I’m just getting started, but some personal takeaways: - Self-control is a fruit of the spirit, i.e cannot force one - I limited myself by saying “I’m not a runner” & “I hate running” because I wasn’t willing to put in the work to improve on it, and was scared to fail yet again - I love having Daniel as my running buddy Any running tips?
