00:49Just let them skip ❤️ one thing I love about autistic people. Is how happy they look when they walk. It’s such a shame so many are made to feel like they have to walk and be like everyone else. This joy is infectious ❤️❤️❤️ Edit - as have a feeling I’ll get the “all the children skip comments” if this goes onto the explore page. So I’ll explain the reason for this video. Yes all children do skip and many skip all the time too. In fact when I was a kid I did ! I like how it felt. And when Hallie’s skips I skip with her because as an adult. It feels great to skip and I can get away with it because I’m keeping up with Hallie. 🤣 However back to my point. Many autistic children skip…. Jump, flap, Mainly those who are sensory seekers, yes some autistic children don’t skip all the time too. But autistic children who skip, jump, flap, tip toe walk are trying to seek extra sensory input to their sensory system to help them feeling regulated. They need more proprioceptive feedback The proprioceptive system is located in our muscles and joints. It provides us with a sense of body awareness and detects/controls force and pressure And a lot of autistic adults don’t skip - probably because they got older and realised it’s not seen as a social norm for older kids to skip. So they stopped. Or they found a different way to regulate. Or they mask when they are out then find ways to regulate at home. So yes. I’m not saying all autistic people skip. But when autistic children are little. It’s a lot of them. And they do it all the time. Hallie always skips. Unless she gets overwhelmed and is laying in the floor. This could lead me on to another topic of autistic people finding balancing seeking input and resting to regulate very difficult. It usually to late when they realise. But I do have another reel on that. ❤️❤️ #autismacceptance #happyflappy #happyhands #sensoryregulation #autismawareness
00:10I’ll be honest here I’m not a expert in gestalt language processing but I can tell you from our experience how Hallie having obsessive characters and YouTube series has helped her to communicate with us. She can pull on so many phrases from her series she watches to communicate and play with us. The frustration Hallie would experience when she was non speaking because she couldn’t tell us what she needed, or what she wanted us to do in a game. Hallie likes things to be exact, so even in her games. I had to get it right. Allowing Hallie to watch a YouTube series has helped her language to come on so much and given her access to many every day scenarios and how to respond and interact. So while there is a lot of shame in allowing unlimited screen time, for some children it is the right thing to do. For some it’s not, For example. Bonnie is under assessment for adhd and autism. But she cannot have unlimited screen time because she gets very over stimulated, upset, emotional and cannot sleep. Bonnie actually understands this herself and chooses to do other things, like calm colouring or listening to her toniebox. Hallie is the opposite again, and gets visual sensory input from screen time to feel regulated. This just shows how this can vary between children. So what I’m not saying here is all kids should have unlimited screen time. But like me, I know this has been the right decision for my Hallie and I’ll stand by it without people making me feel bad or guilty. #screentime #autism #adhd #audhd #autismspectrum #acceptance
00:38Hallie is under professionals now for this. And not something i was going to share here. But ive had so many messages after Hallie had her EEG and so many people here have been through this or are going through it. And i value people’s experiences so much. My gut tells me its sensory related but I’m so glad she managed the EEG and it is now being looked into. These seem to come in waves. And shes done it from a very early age. They seem to happen more when she is burnt out. The first clip i caught by accident as well as the second. The second is only a couple of seconds. But as her mum i can spot the face change. And others may not notice this. Anyone with lived experience let me know your thoughts. #autism #epilepsy #absentseizures #stimming #burnout
00:36EEG - She did it 🙌🏼✨ swipe ➡️ to see the present she picked after 🫶 Hallie was referred for an eeg. Basically she’s been zoning out since she was a baby and she’d have stages where it would be a lot and then not so much. I remember when I asked her old community paediatrician when she was around age 2 ( when she was under autism assessment) and she told me “let’s do, one thing at one” at that time she had referrals here there and everywhere. Genetics, sleep studies etc. but when I mentioned it again to her new paediatrician and showed her the videos we had. She said straight away said she needs a referral. Both of us never thought Hallie would cope with this due to her sensory issues and demand avoidant personality. And appointment where Hallie has been to examined or be close to a doctor have gone terrible. But today was different. I’d spent a lot of time preparing Hallie. The hospital sent a social story and qr code to watch some videos. I spoke to Hallie about all the fun things we could take; snacks, toys and new game on iPad. I kept reminding her most days for the last 2 weeks. The doctor was amazing. She stuck wires and tapes to her teddies first, she put Peppa on her TV for her to watch and she was so kind, playful and patient. Hallie instantly liked her. Which is usually how I know how things will go. Because Hallie makes an instant decision if she’s going to cooperate or if she’s not depending on if she likes a person. Hallie was in her appointment for around an hour. She had to blow a windmill and look at lots of flashing lights. Honestly I can’t tell you how amazing she did. She’s made us all so proud. I discussed my gut feeling that I think it’s sensory related and that since she’s been off school it’s seem to have calmed down loads which tells me it’s connected to exhaustion and burnout. But we will get the results in around 3 weeks. At last a positive hospital experience ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you everyone for your supportive messages. Hallie picked out a frozen costume. Which is a new thing as she’s never been interested in princesses. #autism #eeg #epilepsy #autism #pda #princess
