Now I know what it feels like to meet your baby for the first time and feel your heart explode in joy. Now I know what it feels like to sit up all night with feverish children and what it feels like to go to bed knowing you did all you could but wishing you could have done more. Now I know what exhaustion really means; not just your body being tired but your mind, every fiber of your being so spent, and then seeing that it’s only 5pm. I know what it’s like to wake up every two hours with a newborn who needs to be fed and changed in the darkness of their room. What it’s like to put a meal together only to have it rejected over and over again. I know what it feels like to clean all day only to end the night with messy a house. I now know that it can feel like it’s all too much sometimes and to wish there were five of you so you can get it all done. How you can be surrounded by people but feel so alone. I know what it feels like to want a break from motherhood but not from your kids. To look forward to Mother’s Day and your birthday because those days you’re taken care of. I know, now. The night before he turns one 😭 Tomorrow my last baby hits a pretty wonderful milestone and as I put him in his pajamas for the 365th time tonight and snuggle him in my arms, I can’t help but think of all the moments I rocked him to sleep. Dear C Section Moms, If anyone has ever made you feel you took the easy way out, let me remind you what you went through. You laid your body down and allowed your surgeon to cut you open through seven layers all while conscious. You had no choice but to be strapped down in a cold sterile room while you did everything in your power to breathe and stay calm as you shook uncontrollably. The only kind of birth that your spouse couldn’t be apart of until right before the surgery occurred. You felt every pull and tug while they tried to get your baby out safely while you prayed to God you both survived. Although you were able to see and hear your baby cry behind the plastic, you weren’t able to hold your baby until you were fully closed up and transferred to the recovery room which could’ve taken up to 2 hours. Forced to do breathing treatments every hour so your lungs didn’t collapse all while trying to learn how to teach your baby to latch in the correct form. Just when you thought you could rest, every 10-15 minutes the nurse came in to knead your uterus to encourage the bleeding to stop and the muscle to shrink. Instead of changing diapers and looking after the baby, you practiced walking the hallways with a nurse holding your hand and dragging a pole with your catheter and urine dragging close behind. Then being discharged from the hospital two days later to then go home and take care of your baby and any other children you might have. You see, some people seem to think there are two kinds of moms..those who have c-sections and those who do not. This ‘battle’ divides us, and makes one side feel like a mother who didn’t do the right thing. But that’s where they’re wrong. We simply did what had to be done in order to get our babies here safely and that is nothing to be ashamed of. That is strength. Your body did not fail you. You created that baby, grew them and nurtured them the same way every other mom has. In the first few seconds of your child’s life, you overcame so much in the name of love. One of the things I did not think about was the cut off, and how that was going to impact our finances and when our children went to school ultimately. I am also aware that not everybody has the luxury of planning when they have a child.
