What has your dog taught you? Despite the enormous amounts of stress, heartache, and anxiety that come along with owning a reactive dog, there is so much beauty in this unique experience. Winnie has taught me far more invaluable lessons than just these five things, and I could not be more grateful to be on this journey of overcoming reactivity with her. It’s made me a more considerate person, a more knowledgeable owner and a better handler. It’s crazy to think that I was going through such enormous lows so often 2 years ago. I felt so defeated, overwhelmed and utterly hopeless. I would collapse into my bed and sob into my pillow at the end of a bad reactivity day. From chaos, we found peace 🤍 2022 was the year we found a way of training that worked for us and put in the work to reduce Winnie’s reactivity. 2023 was the year we built on our training from 2022, growing Winnie’s confidence and massively deepening our relationship. Finding and testing new limits (reactivity while running, anxious fosters, group training classes etc.) and working to overcome them. 2024 is the year of enjoying life together and sitting in our peace. Training because it’s fun, going on more adventures, and enjoying this place that we’re worked SO hard to get to. Of course, we will continue to do all the things from previous years to maintain Winnie’s training and continue to improve where we can. But new challenges now are more exciting to me than stressful or daunting. Probably THE MOST common type of behavior problem I see in dogs: Reactivity/Aggression/Bullying due to insecurity and too much free attention and affection given at the wrong times. I am never surprised when I pull a dog away from their owner and they completely change like this. It’s a revelation and a dead giveaway as to what the root cause of the issue is: Insecurity, lack of understanding, no confidence, no leadership. Why do they instantly change? Because being pulled away from their “power source” and having to be alone with the person or thing they so desperately want to go away is THE EXACT OPPOSITE of what they are trying to achieve. It was a mix of walks, small training sessions, and wrapping up with some training at the dog park. He did such an incredible job and made me so proud! 🐾✨ We did have one moment where he reacted to a Samoyed outside some shops. The dog wasn’t aggressive but was pulling and lunging on its leash toward us, which made Koda feel uncomfortable. I thought we might make it through without a reaction, but the situation was just too much. I truly believe if the Samoyed hadn’t been pulling, we could have calmly walked by. This moment reminded me that our journey isn’t about being perfect—it’s about learning and growing together. For every slip-up, there are so many wins to celebrate. How to diffuse a situation nicely if someone wants to meet a dog who can’t or shouldn’t meet others on walks or outings! At the end of the day, I don’t expect everyone to know to not approach. Many people haven’t owned a dog with reactivity. I recommend having a canned response that advocates for yoir dog, but still the puts positive vibes into the air! I have a few go-to’s to make these situations pretty seamless.. Do you have a dog that seems to “randomly” react towards toward dogs? Can’t quite put your finger on what it is about those dogs? There’s no consistency with color, size or breed? I would bet that it’s direct and prolonged eye contact that’s triggering your dog. What can you do? 1️⃣ Build a tolerance to eye contact. Reward small amounts of eye contact with others. Help make eye contact less of a threat. 2️⃣ Guide your dog away if you know that it might create a triggered reaction. Help them avoid a reaction by predicting it, redirecting them and trying again. 3️⃣ Give a meaningful correction. Let them know their response won’t work.
