Disc Herniation -> Hip Impingment -> Sports Hernia I thought I was wildly unlucky. Now I know what kept me in the injury loop for so long, was my belief that these were isolated and unrelated problems. I would "treat" each of these in their own modalities of pain & symptom relief. This kept me stuck for about 3 years. I remember doing research about sports hernia surgery and the results from it...it wasn't promising. However, there was one study that blew my mind... They followed many dozens of operations for the traditional mesh repair of a sports hernia. While the surgeon was operating, they also looked at the hip joint itself and made note of any signs of hip impingement & damage (FAI & CAM lesions). It came back that 86% of these patients having sports hernia surgery...had evidence of hip impingement or damage, whether they knew it or not. Seeing how closely these were correlated actually gave me hope. Maybe it wasn't random. Now years later after having thousands of convo's with back sufferers, another thing also became super clear... Many back sufferers also have hip restriction or pain. Truthfully, I have heard my story told to me by other people so many times now... An initial disc injury that led to avoidance and stiffness. Then comes SI Joint issues and pelvic/hip imbalances. Squatting and other lifts became painful & no longer smooth. By pushing through, direct hip joint pain appears...then a "freak" sports hernia injury. I've heard this timeline dozens of times. I'm not here to claim the exact understanding or solution to every injury loop, as each is just as unique as every person is. However, it would've changed my life back then to know that I was not alone in this. As well as hearing from someone who climbed their way out of the same hell. For me, all of these issues started to resolve at the same time when I faced every single issue head-on. By opening the hips, rebuilding the low ab wall, applying tension to the low back... I eventually became symptom-free of my sports hernia(no surgery), can squat deeper than ever before & have a stronger back than I ever thought possible. I know this will reach the right person. These qualities of your bad determine the likelihood and longevity of the injuries that may come along the way. I used to blame the movement… And completely ignore the structural vulnerability that was my low back. I followed the avoidance mentality that led me to “back friendly” training. This route ended up hiding my problems even more, only making them worse. Any movement/quality that is currently painful or overwhelming CAN be reverse engineered. Take the impossible and scale it back to a level that you CANNOT fail. Build from here and pay steady deposits to this long game investment. I did 1000s of ab sets in my life… As a track athlete, there is a training culture that is OBSESSED with ab training. Which is directionally correction, but often the application ends up leading to imbalance… Even in my college track weightroom, we had to do a set of “ab” work in between EVERY set of lifting. 25+ sets of abs daily, just WITHIN that session. So when I found out that my core was weak after my disc herniation and sports hernia I was confused… Before then I had no clue what the “Core” meant. With cultural obsession over 6-packs, there was never talk of the psoas STRENGTH or QLs at all. Building my 6 pack strength for years, with zero protection to the low ab wall, deeper core muscles, low back muscles… Actually set me up for my sports hernia. Most of my injuries actually came from working INCREDIBLY hard but missing key areas. My strengths became an unsustainable liability compared to my weakness. I hope this video gives some insight on the relevant “CORE” protection you can build for the low back and groin. You can change how your body feels and operates, regardless of the past. This low point is just a check point for you. Stick and move. However bringing consistent focus and stimulus directly to the low back can be a great learning lesson for everyone.
